Project Preview

    Welcome to my Hawken Project. My goal is to create a podcast that teaches leadership directed at youth. Leadership is something I use in everyday life, and I always want to improve on it, so I decided a Hawken Project would be a great way to do so. I am going to interview some of the best-regarded leaders to learn what attributes they think are necessary for leaders to have, as well as any mistakes they made that others can learn from. I thought that since I am learning about leadership myself, why not allow others to join me. Creating a podcast is the perfect way to do so. I enjoy listening to podcasts and usually prefer podcasts over music while driving in the car. I have tried podcasting before, but not as in-depth as my project will be, and I hope to make my podcast as professional as possible. It will be very beneficial to learn about leadership and how I can improve it while I am not yet in college or the workforce. I want to create around eight episodes during my project that I will edit and publish on streaming platforms so anyone can listen. For each podcast, I will reach out to the person through email to hopefully interview them. Once the date and time are finalized, I will need to research the person, so I can personalize the interview and ask related questions. Then I will record the interview and edit it. I will also need to create some branding for it and hopefully market it to get as many listeners as possible. All of these steps will help me practice and learn many skills that I would otherwise not. I am very excited to start this project, and I hope you all can join me through the process, listen, and grow.

    Ryan, I am looking forward to listening to the episodes of your podcasts. Are you planning to post your podcasts episodes all at once or one at a time? Are you planning to share your podcasts with the Hawken community? I'm sure that you are learning as you go about the interview process and the production of podcasts, and it sounds like you are developing your skill set as an interviewer and a producer. Keep up the great work! I'm excited to read more about your experiences on project!

On Thursday, I had my interview with Jaime Irick. It was good and unique, adding a new perspective to my podcast. After the interview, I started setting up a platform to help with distribution. There were a lot of great free ones to choose from, so I had to research which one to use. I decided to use Sounder. I put in all of the info I needed and then started submitting my podcast to different platforms. Right now, it’s on Tune In, and I am waiting for Apple Podcasts and Spotify to approve it. I then started editing my interview with Jaime and did a little with my interview with Mark. I reached out to some local people to see if they would come on my podcast. I also asked if they knew anyone that I could talk to. Hopefully, HOBY will have some connections. On Friday, I wrote my speaking parts for the Scott Snook and Jaime Irick episodes. Thursday was an editing day. It definitely was one of my hardest days because I have listened to these interviews so many times, it is hard to focus while editing them. I started with the interview with Dr. Shankman. I was able to remove the high pitch noise after trying many different effects, but then it made the audio sound different, so I had to try to make it sound more natural. I then went to the part I had to record with my phone, and my part sounded good, but hers sounded like she was on the phone. I first removed the hissing from the computer, and I am still trying to make her part sound better. I then went on to edit my conversation with Professor Snook. The other day, I attempted many times to get an intro, background, and outro I liked, but I decided I was not happy with it, so I re-recorded it. I also made some edits to the Jaime Irick interview. On Wednesday, I worked on my questions for Dr. Shankman and finished them up. I then recorded my Scott Snook intro and outro, so I could start finalizing the edits. It probably took me 15 tries to get the one I liked. The fifteenth one is definitely the hardest because you have to still sound enthusiastic and genuine. After that, I had my interview with Dr. Shankman, which went as well as I could have asked for, considering all of the issues I had. My computer told me it was low on storage and said there might be issues saving the recording, so I quickly tried to delete things while on the call and then tried recording. Halfway through, the recording stopped because it said there was no storage left, so I had to record on my phone. There was also a high pitch noise once in a while, which I will have to edit out.
